Swami Prakashanand Saraswati on the Journey of Madhusudan Saraswati to Krishn’s Grace

Swami Prakashanand Saraswati has devoted his life to showing how pride in knowledge fades with the power of sincere devotion. He has often shared inspiring examples of seekers who found fulfillment only after turning their hearts to God. In his teachings, Swami Prakashanand Saraswati recounts how Madhusudan Saraswati moved from intellectual debate to loving surrender and was blessed with Krishn’s Grace.

According to Swami Prakashanand Saraswati

Madhusudan Saraswati, who was a great follower of Shankaracharya, made an occupation out of doing shastrarth (debating the philosophy of the scriptures). Whenever he saw a devotee (bhakt) with less knowledge of the scriptures, he would challenge him to a debate. He would receive much pleasure in that person’s defeat and would feel, “Today I defeated a Vaishnav!”

Once, he went to Kashi, the center of scriptural knowledge, to debate with a follower of the path of gyan (knowledge), who was also a bhakt Saint. Madhusudan Saraswati had the intention of defeating that Saint. When they met, the Saint asked Madhusudan Saraswati, “What is your profession?” Madhusudan replied with great pride, “I only do shastrarth on advaitvedant (monism) and I have come to debate with you.” The bhakt Saint said, “So you must win sometimes and lose sometimes.” Madhusudan replied with pride, “I rarely lose, I almost always win.” “So, when you are defeated, you must feel very unhappy, and when you win, you must feel very happy.” Madhusudan said, “Yes.” So the Saint said, “You are only a confused gyani. Being a gyani means you understand that you are not the body. You remain unaffected by any situation. This is the state of being established in the Divine.”

Madhusudan realized his mistake. The Saint then told him, “You have wasted your time in scriptural debate. Now go to Vrindaban and do devotion to Shree Krishn. When your mind is purified by this, then come back and do shastrarth.”

Madhusudan went to Vrindaban and did loving devotion to Shree Krishn. Quickly, he attained his Divine vision. When Shree Krishn appeared in front of him, Madhusudan turned his face away from Him. Krishn immediately appeared on the opposite side, and Madhusudan turned his face away again. Finally, Krishn asked him, “Why are you doing this?” Madhusudan replied, “Why did it take you so much time to come? I have been crying in separation from You for so long.” Through His power, yogmaya, Shree Krishn showed Madhusudan the mountains of sins he had committed from past lives, and He said, “How could I have come sooner?”

Afterwards, Madhusudan totally refuted Shankaracharya’s philosophy of monism as well as his commentary on the Gita. So even though Madhusudan had been a foremost scholar of advaitgyan, in the end, he had to do devotion to God, and only then did he attain God’s Divine vision. Thus, whether a great gyani wants to attain the impersonal aspect of God or liberation from maya, he must do devotion to the personal form of God to receive His Grace.
